About the Void

Void is a dual line kite designed for outdoor use in 0-3mph wind.

The story of Void begins with the Shiznit. I designed the Shiznit specifically for indoor use, but I found myself bringing one with me in my outdoor bag to use when the wind dies. I very much enjoyed using the Shiznit in that way, but I felt that I wanted a little bit more out of it, but I knew that, if I made the necessary changes to get what I wanted, the Shiznit would not fly as well indoors. So, I began designing the Void, based on the the Shiznit, but designed specifically for outdoors in little or no wind. I wanted a kite that I could pull out in those conditions to slap around, have some fun, and not work too hard. I typically fly my Void on 40ft or 85ft lines.

The first step in the design of the Void was to take the Shiznit and make it a bit bigger so it can fill up the sky a bit more and so it can have a bit more lift to support adding weight in strategic places.

The Shiznit has a single-piece 48"-long leading edge and lower spreader, which is the longest kite package I am willing to carry in my travels. Making the kite bigger, meant that I needed to break that apart. So, I switched to a 2-piece ferruled pultruded carbon leading edge, and a 2-piece Skyshark 2PT lower spreader. The 2PT lower spreader has the added benefit of stiffening the body of the sail to facilitate slack line tricks.

From there, I adjusted the depth of the sail, the shape of the trailing edge, the weight distribution, and the bridle.

The result is a kite that flies very easily in 0-3mph of wind, that has a reasonably stable fade, and can do most tricks including cometes, cascades, snap lazies, jacob's ladders, etc.

Each Void is hand made to order by me, Spencer "Watty" Watson.
