K118 - Escape #16
This is a vented Escape, based on the plans from Ulzburger kites. This isn't quite like the vented plans that I made available, but is an alternative venting design that I used on K92. The owner of K92 wanted another one, so here we are.
Material
Unlike K92, this Escape is made with a mixture of Icarex and Ottertex. The Icrex is used in the center of the sail, and Ottertex is used elsehwere. The Icarex is much less stretchy than the Ottertex, so the idea is to use the less flexible fabric in the main body to maintain the kites structure better over time. The Ottertex is heavier and softer, which helps the sail absorb gusts and generally feel better in heavier wind.
Dye sublimation
As with K117, I used dye sublimation to print some details on the sail. THis was the first time trying to print on Ottertex, but it seemed to handle it similarly to Icarex, with a bit of shrinkage.
Templating
For some of the reinforcement pieces, I made hard templates out of Ram Board. However, I did this using my Cricut rather than cutting them out by hand with scissors. This was very convenient and made the templates very clean. I expect I will be using the Cricut more often for template making in the future.
