K100 - Plaid (Escape) #1
For my 100th kite build, I decided to make a dual-line companion to K99. Using a similar plaid design on a dual line, but in such a way that the plaid looks straight when the kite is fully assembled. This is an Escape, designed by Ulzburger kites, but with a custom plaid skin.
Design
In order to come up with the pattern, I first made a cheap version of an Escape sail using some cheap white fabric. I framed that cheap sail and suspended it in my shop. I then made a plaid design on my computer, and projected it into the sail. I carefully used a sharpie to trace the lines from the projection on to the white sail. I then traced that pattern onto a blank Escape plan, and expanded all of the lines to create seem allowances and end up with the final plan.
Applique
The appliqué approach was pretty much the same as K99, using hot-cutting with small tabs to keep the pieced of fabric from being unwieldy.
Sleeve
This is my first dual line sleeve with the extra pocket for spare parts. I think it turned out pretty well, and I have a full set of spare fittings stored inside the pocket.
