K99 - Plaid #1
For my 99th and 100th kite builds, I’ve been planning on making something a bit special. This is the first part of my plan. The idea behind this design was to challenge my hot-cutting appliqué technique by using it to achieve a design that is rather complicated.
The base of this kite is pretty similar to K98. The main point of interest in this kite was the appliqué.
Applique Technique
All of the appliqué here is hot-cut. I accomplished this by having paper prints of my design. I laid a single color down on top of that paper print on my illuminated table, then hot cut out the whole pattern. However, when I did the hot cutting in areas where there are small strips that will get hard to handle later, I left small tabs uncut. This allowed me to cut most the pattern without it becoming a big mess.
After I cut out both colors, I laid them back on top of each other, then hot-tacked them together, and sewed them. I then came back and used scissors to cut the small tabs that I left when hot cutting.
