Build Log

K85 - Escape #3

This is an Escape LW, built based on the Ulzburger open source plan. It’s built with less reinforcement than I did the previous builds since this is meant to be a lighter weight version.

Build notes:

Trailing edge

There are a couple spots right next to the Dacron reinforcement, where the trailing edge gets a little wonky. I think I had a bit of trouble keeping that straight when transitioning from the Dacron to the nylon, so I’ll have to keep that in mind when I do something like that in the future.

Nose

After I had done the main bit of sewing on the nose, I realized that I put it on backwards, so the spine opening was in the front, and the triangle tip was at the back. Fortunately, I hadn’t sewn around the tip yet, so I was able to carefully cut the tip off, so now it basically has a spine opening on both the front and the back, but that’s not a big deal.

Bridle

I went with the specs for the Sephan bridle since the Birger bridle is the same as the STD, and I thought I’d try something a bit different. I did my heat-shrink reinforcement on the upper leg of the bridles, but I still want to come up with a better solution than this. I noticed the other day on one of my 100Sixteens with the heatshrink, the heatshrink got torn up by the abrasion against the spreader, so I’m not sure that it’s providing much benefit for long. I’d like to try using heavier bridle sleeving to go over the 100lb bridle, but I haven’t managed to get the right size to fit well.
