K55 - 90Nine #2
My third dual line build. This 90Nine (based on plan by Karel Oh) is built as an SUL, so I stayed more conservative with the amount of reinforcement.
Note that I cheated a bit on the colors, sorry Karel. I add fabric tabs to my bags to help differentiate them, and if I kept the panel in between the red as light gray, I wouldn't be able to tell this apart from the standard very easily. I plan to do the same sort of thing but with black when I make a vented one.
edit: I forgot to add yo-yo stoppers before taking the pictures and flying it for the first time. I've since added yo-yo stoppers.
Interesting aspects:
Sewn holes
I experimented a bit with the spine holes for the lower spreader and the bridle connection by using a single-stitch zig-zag around the circle. I think they turned out very nicely and I think I’ll continue to do that in the future.
Upper spreader reinforcement
I replaced the straght-edge reinforcement with a circular reinforcement and sewed it in using a single-stitch zigzag. I think this looks much nicer.
Trailing edge reinforcement
I cut the edges of the Dacron trailing edge at a 45 degree angle which made it look a bit cleaner. I also continued a single multi-step zigzag through the entire trailing edge, then added an extra single-stitch zig-zag on the top of the Dacron. I really like how his turned out as well.
Spreader positioning
On 90Nine #1, I miscalculated the position of the spreader connectors somehow. I was able to make it work, but I paid extra attention to that this time.
Nose reinforcement
On 90Nine #1, I had a bit of a hard time sewing in the Dacron reinforcement along the nose because it was so skinny. I think I overcorrected on this one though. I used a 1” wide piece of Dacron, and I think it’s just too much. I’ll probably try using something like 1/2” or 3/4” next time, and maybe cut the corners at an angle.
